First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Schumacher Homes.
Construction Support Coordinator
I first spoke with Lisa Thomas from the Schumacher Homes Recruiting Team on a virtual Zoom call. She was very pleasant and asked general questions while giving me details about the job and company. If the recruiter, like Lisa, thinks you're a good fit, they'll move you to the next stage, which is an in-person interview. I did move forward and met with Kerry Zutavern, the Construction Support Manager, and 'Chris' (no last name given), the VP of Administration, at their home office in Canton, Ohio. Both Kerry and Chris were nice too. The in-person interview lasted about an hour and was more in-depth than the Zoom call, but still pretty standard. They asked typical interview questions. I brought a resume for both Kerry and Chris. Even though I'd applied online, they also had me fill out a paper application there, which mostly repeated what's on a resume, like work history, education, references, and if I'd ever been fired or asked to leave a job and why. The interview went well overall and was a good experience.
- What three words would your coworkers say about you?
- What's a single word that describes you?
- What motivates you?
Construction Superintendent
The first interview was with the GM, starting around 4pm and lasting over two hours. It began with standard interview questions about previous builders and the role's responsibilities. We found we had a lot in common personally and professionally, so we spent the rest of the time discussing people we knew and family. I thought I might get an offer then, but he mentioned I needed to interview with the Regional Manager. A few days later, I had a 45-minute phone interview with the Regional Manager. It covered similar topics to the first interview's initial hour, and I left feeling neutral about it. About a week later, I got an automated email saying I didn't get the job, which felt disappointing after two interviews, especially since the email felt like spam.
- Can you describe your experience with assessing undeveloped land that hasn't been cleared for construction yet, like wooded lots?
Associate Studio Designer
The interviewer asked me question after question, all about my resume, trying to see if my experience fit the job. I thought it was for an Interior Design Associate role, but it turned out to be a job just scheduling appointments for people to visit the showroom. It was basically a lead generation role, calling people to get them into the showroom, and the pay was $14.00 an hour. It wasn't the right fit for me; I'm an artist and designer, not an aggressive salesperson. She seemed to be trying to figure out how much I cared about money and if that's what drives me.
- What is your motivation for earning money?
Purchasing Coordinator
I interviewed with the hiring manager and the VP of operations. It was a pretty standard and relaxed interview process. Both interviewers were friendly and made me feel comfortable by having some casual conversation, not just business talk. They didn't ask too many difficult questions, so it wasn't a super hard interview. The whole thing moved really fast; they called me that same afternoon with an offer.
- How would you describe yourself in a single word?
