I went through a really long and tough interview process with Scentbird, with 7 interviews total. I talked to a Senior Product Designer, the Director of Product Design, the CPO, and the Senior Director of Digital Product. I had to do a design challenge that they said would take 3 hours, but it was actually huge, asking me to redesign the whole product funnel from the homepage all the way to checkout. This included strategy, UX flows, a prototype, and a presentation, which was way more than what's reasonable for free work. During the call with the Director of Product Design, I noticed them writing down my ideas and saying they should do them next quarter. They also asked for my presentation beforehand and after the meeting, multiple people wanted access to it even though it was meant to be presented live. After the last interview with the CPO, they just stopped communicating. I sent two polite follow-up emails but never heard back with feedback, a rejection, or any kind of closure. The whole thing felt like they were taking a lot from me without giving anything back; I put in a ton of time, they got strategic product ideas, and then there was no transparency or respect at the end. I'd tell other designers and product people to be super careful about big, end-to-end challenges here.

Confirmed questions1 question
  • Could you design a complete redesign of the product funnel, covering everything from the homepage to the checkout process? This should include your UX strategy, flow designs, a prototype, and a presentation. The estimated time for this task was initially stated as under 3 hours, but it ended up requiring approximately 16 hours of my time.

Recruiter reached out on LinkedIn to schedule an initial screening. She sent some helpful guides about Scentbird and the interview process before our 30-minute call, which was a good chat. Soon after, she arranged a meeting with the hiring manager. This call was also clear, concise, and provided useful info about the company and interviews. The 1-hour meeting with the hiring manager went well, with good communication and answers to all questions. Things ended on a positive note. I sent a thank you to the recruiter within two days but heard nothing back before Thanksgiving. The next week, I sent a thank you to the hiring manager with no response. After three weeks, I emailed and messaged the recruiter again, still no reply. It's frustrating when you don't get a response, especially when you'd just like to know if you got the job or not.

This company's interview process seems a bit unusual. I've noticed the same Senior Manager position listed yearly since around 2021, which raises some concerns. Last year, I interviewed with HR for this role but wasn't selected. When I reapplied about two years later, HR claimed the position was entirely new. My suspicion is that they might be misleading candidates, potentially gathering information over time and requiring a lengthy, uncompensated assignment (2-3 hours), which feels excessive. I'd caution against interviewing for any digital roles here. Additionally, some research I did uncovered strange details about the company's CMO.

The interview process was pretty smooth and everyone was professional. First, there was a phone screening with a recruiter. Then, I had a technical interview where we went over my JavaScript, React, and TypeScript skills. The last part was a cultural fit interview with the manager and some team members. They were all really friendly, and the questions felt fair and on point. I got an offer and took it because the job and company seemed like a great fit for me.
