First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Savvis.
Software Engineer
I had a technical phone screen with a developer first. Then, I went in for a face-to-face interview with the hiring manager. After that, I met with a couple of other developers and then one more manager. The interviews had technical questions and general questions. The developers were super technical and we talked about everything from memory (heap/stack), caching, Java, and SOAP vs. REST. The manager asked more general things like my career goals (short, mid, long term), how I handle deadlines, and how I deal with being on a project that's short on people.
- If you were tasked with architecting an e-commerce website, what technology stack would you propose and what's your reasoning?
- Can you tell me the distinctions between SOAP and REST Web Services?
IT
The interviewing process was the only professional process I experienced at Savvis. The hiring process was a mess -- they used a 3rd party for reference reviews, academic & criminal background check, a long drawn out process and the HR rep didn't know how long it would take. My experience and everyone I spoke to had their hire dates pushed out. Once in the company there is no training, yet you will be held accountable and graded unfairly, this is their way of managing by fear. It appears their management staff are friends and don't need to be qualified. The workplace culture is disrespectful to employees and workloads are not doable. Employee performance is measured against unattainable targets, so the culture can be demotivating. The environment does not allow anyone to be successful.
- How do you handle difficult individuals on your team?
Migration Architect
The process started with a technical screen. After that, I had an interview with my future manager, followed by a sanity check interview with their peer. It was a quick process and they were good to me. The first interviewer mentioned that the hiring speed can change based on how many deals they've closed. His hiring took 2 months, but mine was completed in 2 1/2 weeks from the first contact. The recruiting team was courteous and respectful, always returning calls and emails promptly and providing quick feedback. However, the feedback wasn't really needed since the interviewers were very open and we connected well immediately. All interviews were conducted over the phone or WebEx.
- What are your salary expectations?
Mechanical Engineer
The hiring process works well and candidates don't feel like just another number. However, the time from when you apply to when you get hired can be quite long because of the internal steps it takes to approve the job opening after it's posted, and this sometimes means good potential candidates get hired elsewhere while waiting for Savvis positions.
- Are you familiar with military experience in a mission critical environment?
- Can you tell me about your experience in submarine engine room operations?
