First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Savage Companies.
Payroll Clerk
Applied, then waited about two weeks for the interview. I met with the controller and payroll manager, and it seemed to go really well. I was kind of in the dark about whether I got the job for over two weeks. I tried to reach out to find out, but they were never available and didn't return my calls. Finally, they called and let me know I got the job.

- I'd like to ask for a lot of information about the role.
Human Resources
So I had my first interview and it went pretty good, then they called me back for a second one. Both interviews were pretty long, like over an hour each. They sent me a personality test and said they'd set up a final interview after I finished it, but then... radio silence. I asked the hiring manager, and she swore they were still interested and that they'd call me the 'next week'. Still nothing, so I figured I wasn't a fit. Honestly, a quick heads-up would've been nice since I put time into this. Four months later, out of the blue, they hit me up asking for one more interview, gushing about how much their department needed me. After that, the hiring manager said they were 'just waiting for all the pieces to fall into place' and to just hang tight. Another month zipped by, and now I'm realizing this place isn't for me. I really value communication, and if they can't manage that before hiring, I'm worried about what it'll be like after. They got me once, then again, but not a third time.

I was contacted by a recruiting agency, Savage was looking to fill several accounting positions. They sent my resume along with recommendations. I met with the department manager, and then her boss briefly joined. He was impressed and wanted me to be a supervisor, saying he'd email me with questions, but he never did, which was disappointing. I followed up with a thank you to my recruiter, who then forwarded it. She also checked in and learned they were busy with month-end and quarter-end closing. They didn't want to lose me, so they offered me a part-time role until things settled in a couple of weeks, then full-time. My recruiter got an email asking if I was still available to discuss hiring options. This was a Wednesday, and I started that Friday. We had a working lunch in a conference room, which was informative. It's nice to feel included already, and so far, it doesn't seem political.
- Can you tell me how you handle debit and credit journal entries?
- What kinds of accruals have you worked with previously?
Benefits Specialist
The whole interview process felt really disorganized and unprofessional. I first spoke with a guy who seemed totally checked out, yawning and checking his watch the whole time. Then, two more people joined for additional interviews, and they mostly just repeated the same questions from the first interview. The manager was really rude and unprofessional, even calling me by the wrong name. She was snotty and made nasty comments after I answered her questions. I have years of experience in this field and am qualified, but the way this interview was handled was a major turnoff, and I wouldn't want to work for this company.
- Can you tell me about your biggest weakness?
- What would you consider your greatest strength?
