I went through an interview process where I met with a committee. They asked typical counseling questions, and everyone was very friendly. Unfortunately, I wasn't offered a position. I suspect they were hiring for counselors in specialized programs, as I interviewed with the general counselor department.

Way too long and time-consuming for a technician role! First, there's a written test on a specific Saturday morning. It was pretty easy and what you'd expect. Then, weeks later, there's an oral exam, also on a fixed weekday with no flexibility and no chance for you to ask questions. The last step was the actual interview, which was super short (under 20 mins) and more like another oral exam, not about getting to know you or your skills. Again, no room for your input, which suggests they don't want someone long-term who'll really shine. I think about 8 people interviewed for one spot. I was unhappy with the whole thing and how uninterested the interviewers seemed. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're unemployed and have tons of time for a complicated process that's rigged against you. The interview itself was standard, but the process was way too much for a lab tech job.

The hiring process at this company took a while and the interviewers were not friendly. After a month of waiting, I was invited to take an online assessment. Two weeks after completing that, I had a virtual interview scheduled for a week later. They sent me some preparation materials and sample answers, but it didn't really help with how cold the interviewers were. I was told a panel of 6 people would interview me, but only 2 actually showed up. From the start, it felt like they were just going through the motions and weren't really considering me. They barely introduced themselves and mostly didn't look at the screen when I was talking. Even though SMC says they have a non-biased process, the lack of any warmth or emotion made me feel unwelcome and disconnected. The interview was only 30 minutes on Zoom. I was put on a list for Administrative Assistant roles but I won't be continuing with this company because it was one of the most uncomfortable interviews I've experienced.

Super offensive and elitist interview. I wouldn't suggest it if you're looking for an open-minded, professional, welcoming, and supportive team. I really wanted to give this office a good review, but after talking to a bunch of Higher Ed people who all said it was pretty unprofessional, I had to be honest. Hopefully, they've improved their practices and team dynamics since I interviewed, but if you get a bad vibe during your interview, trust it.
