First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at San Bernardino County.
Office Assistant
I submitted my application online, then I had to take a test. After that, it took 3 months before I started getting interview offers. I ended up interviewing at different places for the same job. Each department had a group interview where we were given 15 minutes to look at the questions we would be asked. The questions were pretty easy, and the supervisors were nice. But following up after the interviews was really disappointing. I didn't know who had my application info, my emails were ignored, and I never heard back about the hiring manager's decision. The interviews themselves were fine, but I expected more from the County after that.
- What's the key skill for an Office Assistant, and how have you used it before?
- What would you do if you had a lot of projects and your supervisor gave you an urgent task?
- Describe how you would manage a difficult or angry caller.
Office Assistant
The normal process is that it starts with a panel. The questions are easy to answer. The panel takes notes. You get a little time to answer the questions before you interview.
- In your own words, what is customer service?
- Can you describe your strategies for managing stress?
- How would you handle a disagreement with a colleague or your supervisor?
Office Assistant
They seemed to have already decided who they were going to hire before the interview even happened. This is something that happens in a lot of departments, and I don't think it's fair. It's all about who you know these days, not just what you know or your experience.
