First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Samuel Merritt University.
Data Engineer
The experience was great, and they asked about projects and behavioral questions in every part. First, they screen the application and resume, checking for an IT or related degree, desktop/IT support experience, and basic tech skills like Windows, networking, AD, and troubleshooting. Shortlisted people get a call or email. Then, there's an HR screening, either by phone or virtually, to check basic fit and communication skills.
- They asked me how I would troubleshoot a system when a user reports performance or network issues.
- They asked questions around Windows OS basics, networking fundamentals, and Active Directory user management.
- They mostly asked basic technical questions and simple troubleshooting scenarios to understand my approach.
Assistant Professor
The interview process was managed professionally and quickly. They communicated clearly and set expectations early on, making things smooth and organized. The interview felt relaxed and conversational, letting me share my background and skills easily. The interviewers asked good questions that helped me show my strengths and learn about the job and the university's vibe. Overall, it was a respectful and efficient process, and I felt good about the team and the university.
- Can you describe your teaching philosophy?
Human Resources Coordinator
This was a horrible interview process. They seemed to be there just to waste my time. They didn't even provide feedback and ghosted me. It's a garbage university and a garbage place to interview. If you have an interview scheduled, I'd suggest canceling it to save yourself some time.
- Can you tell me about yourself and your background?
Simulation & Technical Service Technician
The start of the interview process was super easy. Greg from HR (16JUN2024) hit me up fast after I applied with a phone call and then an email. We set up an interview for 17JUN2024. It was a panel interview with Rachel True (Assistant Prof., Health Science Simulation Center), Lauren O'Neill (Lead Sim Tech Specialist), and Paul Monegas (Technical Services Manager). They were cool and I felt like I was a good fit. I nailed it and they even said I was a strong candidate, the only one with real simulation experience. I got an email soon after saying I was a final candidate and there'd be one last interview (20JUN2024). Greg from HR was super helpful with my questions the whole time. But then, after the final interview, which was basically the same as the first one, things changed. This panel had more people: Rachel True, Lauren O'Neill, Paul Monegas, Jeanette Wong (Associate Dean of Operation), Christopher Vetek (Web and Technical Services Technician), Melvin Bautista (Technical Services Technician), and Marcus Walton (CIO). Again, I had a great interview with great people. Greg emailed me right away after the interview asking if I needed anything. I replied fast. After that last email, I heard nothing more from SMU. It's now 31JUL2024, and I'm hearing from others that they hired a part-time IT person with no simulation experience. I'm not the only one who got ghosted. I know two others who applied for different jobs, got to the end, and then just never heard back. They had to find out from someone else.
- Can you tell me a bit about yourself?
- What makes you the best candidate for this role?
- What would you say are your main strengths and weaknesses?
