& Process

We had an informal video screen with HR and a Data Engineer. They asked some basic get-to-know-you questions and gave me a chance to ask them stuff. Then, there was a technical interview panel with 3 other Data Engineers. It was a case study interview. They gave me a case study and then asked follow-up questions about the design, the pipeline, and other factors.

During my interview, we talked about my previous work experience. I told them about my time as a Food Quality Assurance Officer and Entomologist, where I handled pest management, fumigation, and made sure everything met international food safety standards. They also wanted to know why I was interested in this job, and I told them I'm really passionate about sustainable agriculture and using science to make food safer. We also chatted about my hobbies – I like reading agricultural journals, being outdoors, and checking out new farming methods.

The first part was a group interview, and I think there were like 3 rounds with about 10 people in each. It felt super competitive, like you had to really fight to speak. There were 3 interviewers and 5 total people in the room. They started with some general questions for everyone, then we did a group exercise where we had to work through a workers comp. problem. After that, they asked us questions about our conclusions. The group interview wrapped up with a writing essay. The second interview involved 5 people in a room asking questions that they gave us when we arrived. Once the Q&A was done, an employee gave us a tour and we could ask them questions they suggested we save for that. I'm guessing they then debriefed with the interviewers. The whole thing felt really rigid, not much room for personality. It seemed like a very 'robot-like' position and company after walking around and going through the interviews.

An interview consisting of a conversation between a job applicant and a representative of an employer which is conducted to assess whether the applicant should be hired. Interviews vary in the extent to which the questions are structured, from a totally unstructured and free-wheeling conversation, to a structured interview in which an applicant is asked a predetermined list of questions in a specified order; structured interviews are usually more accurate predictors of which applicants will make suitable employees, according to research studies.
