Customer Success Manager
After applying online, a recruiter reached out about a week later to set up a 30-minute call. The chat mostly covered my past experience overall, and the recruiter emphasized repeatedly that the job involves working a lot and at odd hours. I stressed multiple times that I've also put in long hours for good reasons. The recruiter expressed a concern about my resume mentioning consistently exceeding KPIs. They also noted they weren't too worried about sales or expansion figures, prioritizing customer support instead. I explained in detail how my customer focus leads to numbers that naturally follow from good customer care. It seemed they weren't seeking an experienced CSM who could help grow a team in a fast-paced environment. I ended the process unclear about their specific needs, how CSMs function, the team structure, inter-departmental collaboration, and so on.

Marketing
Banjo is focused on their mission to reduce suffering and save human lives. While it's a great mission, their expectations are a bit much. During my second phone screen, they stated, "We're not a typical company. We don't like to be second to anyone else in your consideration. If we're not your first and only option, we're frankly not interested in bringing you on." While that's a good goal, it's not really realistic. Their website doesn't describe their product or give much insight, and they expect new candidates (even ones they reached out to and are trying to recruit) to be super passionate about joining their company. They didn't provide enough info or time for that kind of passion to develop. With how they hire, I worry they might end up hiring people who are only passionate for a short time, then burn out and leave.
- Is Banjo your sole focus and top choice?
- We are not looking to hire individuals who are not fully committed to only working at Banjo.
Digital Designer
I was first sent an email asking if I understood the job description, and that the role would involve a lot of creating sales collateral and PowerPoints. I confirmed I understood, given it was a Jr. Role. Then we had the phone interview, which felt awkward as the interviewer seemed uninterested. When it was my turn to ask questions about benefits and company culture, I was interrupted and told my learning curve was too great. I was surprised by this abrupt rejection, especially with my 4 years of digital design and 6 years of freelance experience, feeling I was qualified to design PowerPoints. I'm unsure what they were seeking, but suggest more politeness and holding off on rejection until after the interview. It's possible the interviewer was also frustrated the video chat wasn't working, but overall it was a rude and negative experience.
- Could you explain what you understand Banjo to be?
Events Associate
I got contacted by the company super fast after applying, like the same week! They use a bunch of different titles for pretty much the same job, which they said is to make sure the team is diverse and works well. So, first I chatted with someone from the team on Skype. Then, a few days later, I went in for an in-person interview with two supervisors. That seemed to go okay, and the day after that, the HR director reached out with a pretty good offer, which I took. My advice: look up the company beforehand. And honestly, don't bother applying if you aren't someone who can handle pressure or if you want a typical 9-to-5 setup.
- Are you able to work nights?
