First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at SAF-HOLLAND.
Sales
It was a really open and casual meeting. The management team flew in from Ontario to chat with me. They were super open about the job and what they expected. The second meeting was also in Ontario and it was kind of like an orientation too.
- Tell me about a time you dealt with an unhappy customer who was about to stop being a customer.
Graphic Designer
I met with three people for the interview. The first guy met me at reception and we went to a conference room where another person joined us. After introductions, we started asking questions. I talked about myself and my background. I went through my portfolio, showing campaigns and branding, and explaining the design process from start to finish. Then, the main interviewer told me about the company and his role. He discussed elevating the marketing group with new technology and described his ideal team. The third person joined us near the end of this discussion. He briefly looked at my portfolio, asking about the software I used and the originality of my work. He seemed happy and left with the first interviewer. The main marketing person then gave me a tour of the office and shared his vision for the marketing department and the qualities he's looking for in a candidate. In his office, he emphasized the confidential nature of his work and the need for the hired person to maintain confidentiality. He also asked if I'd be willing to handle tasks like making copies and assembling presentation booklets, or if I felt those tasks were beneath me.
- Could you tell me about yourself and your experience?
- Please walk me through your portfolio, highlighting campaigns, branding, and the process of creating the designs from concept to completion.
- What software did you use to create these graphics?
Web Media Specialist
A state-funded staffing agency set up this interview for a Web Media Specialist role. I had plenty of web experience, including coding and graphics, and had even brought printouts of my work and references. I had also researched the company thoroughly beforehand. Two people from SAF-Holland met with me. They weren't interested in my prepared materials, only in my knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint, which wasn't the main focus of the job description but apparently was very important. I told them I knew about SharePoint but hadn't used it, and assured them I could learn their content management system, given my extensive computer experience. Three weeks later, I emailed the agency, who then contacted the interviewers. I was informed they decided to promote someone from within the company. I expressed to the agency that this was unprofessional and likely a good thing they didn't hire me.
- What is your proficiency level with SharePoint?
Human Resources
