& Process

I went through 3 rounds of interviews with this org, but they ended up ghosting me. The first was a 1-hour Zoom call talking about the job and my experience with someone from the research team. Then, I had a series of 6 interviews with different people and groups. These interviews were a mix of casual chats and technical challenges. The third round was similar to the second, but I also had to give a 1-hour presentation on some of my research projects. After that, I was supposed to interview with the VP, but less than an hour before, I got two automated emails canceling the interview and sending a rejection. It was weird because everyone seemed to like me and I thought I was getting an offer. They gave no reason for the change and ignored my follow-ups.

After an initial phone chat, I had an on-site interview where I met several team members. Since I was a new grad, they gave me the option to do a technical presentation on the day of the interview. The interviews included some coding challenges and conceptual questions related to my skills, background, and interests. I picked 'difficult' for the interview level mainly because of the technical presentation; otherwise, the on-site questions were pretty standard and fair.

I applied on their website. First, there was a 1-hour phone screen, then a take-home coding challenge. After that, I had a 6-hour onsite interview with more than 8 staff members. The onsite wasn't too hard, but I had a bad experience. Mostly it was behavioral questions and questions about my past work. One person gave me a whiteboard challenge that was pretty easy. Two others asked me some Java and CS questions, like about threading, classes, and jump tables. Towards the end, someone said they thought I didn't know how to code (ouch). One staff member had bad body language, putting their legs on the table. Even though they said they use whatever tech is best, nobody showed it. The staff lacked diversity, the building was gloomy, and I was ghosted after the long onsite. There were some nice staff members (5-6 out of 8), but the others really messed with my confidence and made me feel disrespected.

The phone interview was 90 minutes long and covered programming, math, engineering, and cognitive science questions specific to NLP. They had me write code over the phone, so having Google open was helpful. After the phone interview, you need to submit code samples for approval. If approved, you'll have an on-site interview which is also very technical, along with management/HR interviews. The whole on-site process takes about 4-5 hours.
