After applying, I got a quick response and had a phone interview within a week. Then, a few weeks later, I went in for an in-person interview. It started off a bit awkwardly. I met with the same person from the phone interview, and she was nice, but the owner, when I first met her, didn't stand up to greet me and just offered her hand. There was no initial small talk. The HR person explained how the interview would go: they'd ask questions, it would be conversational, and then I could ask my questions. The owner mainly smiled when talking to the HR woman, and even while listening to my answers, it felt like she'd already decided about me before I even came in. Even though I didn't get an offer, I knew during the interview that it wouldn't be a good fit because I didn't feel the owner was friendly at all. I figured if you were on her good side, you'd be okay, but if you weren't, I wasn't sure how you could recover. I actually felt bad for the employees during the interview.

So I had a phone call with a recruiter that lasted more than an hour. She really wanted to make sure I got what the job and company were all about. We talked about all my previous jobs, what I enjoyed and didn't enjoy, and my future career goals. It was straightforward, no weird stuff. After that, I went in for a full-day, in-person interview. They really drilled down on the position details again. A few days after the in-person, the recruiter contacted me again to check my interest, and I got the offer a short time later.

The hiring process at United States Welding was quite thorough. It began with submitting a resume and cover letter, which I've since found out are pretty important here. Then, there were a few assessments that lasted about an hour. After that, I had a four-hour in-person interview. The interview itself is a bit hard to explain because the assessments evaluate your behavior in a work setting, and they use that to see if you'd be a good fit for the team. They mentioned that the interview is a two-way street, for both you and them to evaluate each other. You're encouraged to ask any questions you need to figure out if US Welding is right for you. It's hard to know exactly what they'll ask, but be ready to show you're thoughtful, driven, and really want the job. Also, be prepared for the interview to feel a bit personal sometimes; it's not intentional, but they won't shy away from it if you go there.

This interview process was way too long. They will ask you the same question at least 3 times in a different context, so pay attention. We sat and talked for over 3 hours. Half of the time was spent listening to them tell you what the company expects from its employees and talking up the company the whole time. After a couple of months, you'll see that they are just fluffing the pillow.
