Operations Manager
I had a phone call scheduled with my direct report, who was a few minutes late and in a noisy place, making it hard to hear at times. We mostly talked about my background, specifically hiring, training, and firing people, and employee retention. My manager's opinion of me was also discussed. The interviewer didn't ask if I had questions and went straight to discussing salary. They then told me someone would be in touch about an assignment, which was sent before my call even ended. I'm fine with assignments and had 48 hours, but the task seemed like they were fishing for ideas. They asked me to create a go-to-market strategy for a new market with a $1M revenue goal in a year, despite the role not mentioning this. The instructions were vague, lacking metrics. I decided to withdraw from the process, and received a response two days later without a signature. I believe I made the right decision, especially since they reposted the job, possibly because their other candidates dropped out. The salary is also below market, and I'm not willing to share valuable ideas without a guaranteed next step.
- Can you share an instance where you had to fire someone, and what lessons did you take away from that experience?
- What positive and negative feedback would your manager provide about your performance?
Operations Manager
The interview process seemed unpolished, as if the interviewers lacked professional experience. Communication was minimal, with only a call from a manager arranged by the recruiter, who didn't seem to screen candidates. During the call, which the manager stated wasn't an interview, I shared my experience, but the manager focused on an unrelated funny story instead of asking about my qualifications for the role. A week later, I was rejected for not matching the position's requirements, despite my extensive operations and management background.
- Can you share an interesting story?
Operations Manager
The interviewer was super nice and it felt more like a chat than a formal interview. She told me about my potential manager, teammates, and the role itself. I got to ask everything I wanted to know at the end.
- Can you share details about your background and previous roles?
