Marketing Vice President
I applied for the job online and had my first call with HR about 10 days later. This was during some company changes. Then, I was given a "homework" assignment for the second round, about a month after that. About another month later, I heard back that I didn't make it to the third round. The whole process had noticeable delays in feedback and was pretty slow overall. It struck me as odd that the homework came before meeting the hiring manager.
- Have you ever built a marketing team from scratch?
VP of Business Development
I applied for a VP role because I really believe in their mission to help educators make a difference. After the recruiter talked to me, I was supposed to do a take-home test that would take a few hours. But before that, I asked to chat with the hiring manager to make sure the job and company were a good fit for me. They said no. It seemed weird to spend hours on a project without talking to leadership or understanding what they wanted, the team vibe, or the main goals. I looked at reviews and saw others had similar thoughts. Also, I do this kind of market strategy work as a consultant, and it felt like they wanted my intellectual property for free. So, I pulled out. I still think their mission is great and hope they start taking the candidate experience and talking to leadership more seriously, because that's how you get great people. I think open talk and shared leadership beats top-down any day.
- Can you walk me through your career path and what your future aspirations are?
Curriculum Director
The process started with a phone screen and a 2-hour performance task. Then there was a lesson modification and presentation, followed by teaching a sample lesson. We also did a curriculum meeting simulation and a project management simulation. After that, it was a panel interview and individual interviews. More steps were added as we went on. HR sent emails with major mistakes about interview locations and performance task instructions. I told HR they needed to respond so I could manage deadlines for other offers, but they just ignored it. The instructors and designers seemed real and dedicated. Upper management seemed a bit out of touch. The background check person read from a script, which was obvious to my recommenders.
- How do you approach DEI, and how does that show up in your management?
- Describe your approach to receiving feedback.
Director of Special Projects
The interview process was a lengthy one. I think I started the process in March and it was completed by July. It consisted of a few over-the-phone interviews, followed by a pretty intense timed task assignment. I had three hours to complete four tasks ranging from something as simple to prioritizing the Dean's schedule and replying to emails to actually creating a proposal for a new initiative in the company. I wasn't asked to participate in the final round, which would have been a panel interview. Overall, my interactions with the hiring team were pleasant, and I would definitely apply for another position in the future should I see a good fit.
- Can you share an instance where you managed a project from its inception to its completion and describe your management approach during that time?
