First, a recruiter called to screen my application. Then, I had an informal meeting with the hiring manager to get introduced and discuss the role and my responsibilities. Finally, there was a panel interview where I was asked behavioral questions using the STAR method, focusing on the company's core skills and competencies.

The interview process started with a phone screen. Unfortunately, the REI recruiter seemed unsure about the role's demands and hadn't reviewed my resume beforehand. It felt disorganized. The recruiter was confused about the necessary experience and skills, asking questions to clarify what they were looking for. There was also a mention of requirements from the hiring manager that differed from the job posting. This was surprising and disappointing. It makes you wonder about how well someone would do at REI if the interview process isn't clear about the role and can't properly identify the needed experience and skills.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

I applied online and after about a week, I got a HireVue screening. Following that, I had a recruiter interview, then several more interviews over a few weeks with team members, HR, and marketing folks. The final interview was with the hiring manager. I had turned down another interview to do this one and prepped for hours. The hiring manager asked me one question and then said everyone enjoyed meeting me. However, she informed me that I wouldn't be offered the position but might be considered for a contract role on another team in a few months. She described it as an extended interview, so after 9+ interviews and several weeks, they wanted to offer me a potential position to further assess my skills? I wish they had communicated this via email so I wouldn't have missed another opportunity. At least I know now to avoid applying for REI positions.
