First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at REI.
Executive Assistant
There were 3 interviews. First, I spoke with the recruiter, then with HR, and finally the manager. They all asked pretty much the same things. My advice? Stick to the STAR method, it really helps.
- Can you share an instance where you faced and overcame a challenge at work?
Administrative Assistant
I applied online and after about 4 weeks, a recruiter called me for an initial phone screening. The HR person (Azizah) was nice and asked about my career goals with REI and my qualifications. Then, I had another phone screen with the hiring manager, followed by a panel interview/call with two team members. They invited me in for an interview, gave me a campus tour, and then I met with the hiring team and manager for about 2 hours of 30-minute interviews. The next day, I got an offer and accepted it. REI is the first place I've worked where I feel my career goals and value are truly recognized. If you want a company with great benefits and a 'work-hard, play-hard' vibe, this is it.
- What sparked your interest in this role and in REI specifically?
- Can you tell me about your approach to work?
- Describe a high-pressure situation you encountered at work and how you managed it.
Administrative Assistant
First, HR emailed to schedule a phone interview, and it took about a week to hear back about moving forward to a one-on-one interview. A senior admin reached out to set up what turned out to be a panel interview. It seemed to be going well until they asked about a skill not mentioned in the job description, which ended up being the key factor. After two weeks of silence, I got an Outlook invite for "AA Feedback," which basically told me I didn't get the job. Normally, they call to let you know and offer a chance for feedback, which they only give if asked. The scheduled call happened late that afternoon, making it hard to focus on work. The manager was quite harsh during the call, which honestly made me glad I didn't get the offer.
- Were you experienced in a skill not listed in the job description?
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What would you say are your best qualities?
