Restaurant Manager
The hiring process involved several steps. Initially, I submitted an application, which was followed by an assessment. Those who performed well on the assessment moved on to an initial HR interview, then an interview with the restaurant's General Manager and the Director of Operations. The HR interview was conducted via video call, and it was pretty relaxed. It mainly covered my background, what I expect for salary, and any questions I had. They also asked some general questions to understand my leadership style and decision-making process. Since I've managed multiple businesses before, I was asked about P&L and budgeting. I was told the interview with the Director of Operations and GM would be around 30-45 minutes, but it ended up being almost 2 hours. This part was much more detailed and delved into specific aspects of my resume and past leadership roles. It included standard questions about my greatest success and failure and how I handled them, along with inquiries about P&L, budgeting techniques, managing staff, and leading during busy periods. Because I didn't have previous restaurant experience, they also asked me what I envisioned a typical day would entail. It was quite thorough and in-depth, but the atmosphere was very laid-back.
- When reviewing your P&L reports, what key areas do you focus on?
- In your previous roles, what actions did you take to increase sales?
- How would your previous staff members characterize you as a leader?
Restaurant Manager
I had my first interview, which was a basic intro. Then, about half an hour later, I had my second interview for Restaurant Manager with the Director of Operations. After she passed me, I met with the Restaurant General Manager. The interviews covered standard leadership and routine situational questions.
- What is your aptitude for positive thinking?
- How do you approach things holistically?
Manager
Being promoted from within the company made things less awkward. I had already been in a similar role as an assistant manager, basically doing a working interview for about six months. The director met me at my restaurant for a formal interview. After that went well, I applied for the management position online. The application included a math test and possibly a personality test. Then, I went to the specific restaurant location for an interview with the General Manager (GM). The director called me the next day with the job offer.
- How would you handle an unhappy guest who is still in the restaurant?
- Why do you want this job?
- What do you do for fun?
