First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Red 5 Studios.
Open World Designer
The entire process from start to finish took under a month. It began with a phone screen by HR, followed by a Skype chat with the hiring manager. The final stage was an onsite interview to meet the team. I personally didn't have to do a design test, but I know some applicants with less experience did. The initial HR call was pretty easy, mostly just discussing the company's current situation and my background. The Skype call was similar. The onsite involved meeting with 4 different groups of people, with HR breaks in between. The questions varied based on the group I was speaking with (e.g., Content Designers asked content-related questions, PvP designers asked PvP questions). Overall, the people were great to interact with, and it felt more like a collaborative design discussion than a strict interview.
- Imagine designing yourself as a character in a video game. What attributes would you choose, and how would you distribute your points among them?
Executive Assistant
A contact I knew passed my resume to the talent acquisition director. They called me in a few days and we set up a phone interview. After that, I went in for an in-person chat with the director. He then brought in the hiring manager and we talked. The company culture fit seemed to be their main focus in the video game industry. I was told by the recruiter a few days later that I was the second choice. I learned a lot from the process and I'm glad I went but sad I didn't get hired.
- Can you share your experience with gaming?
- Have you had a chance to play our game?
- What's your familiarity with our company?
Database Administrator
I found the Mysql Database Administrator job on indeed.com. Shortly after applying, I was contacted by the recruiter who gave me a rundown of the company, the position, and the company culture. Once I confirmed my interest, the recruiter scheduled me for a technical screen with the director of operations. This was followed by a multi-group interview with developers. The questions were specific to the company's challenges, which I found engaging and thought-provoking. The company has a close-knit, open, and flat work environment, and everyone I met was nice and talented with good working relationships.

Game Designer
Red 5 initially reached out, but after a couple of interview calls, they informed me they were no longer hiring. After a few months, I was contacted again and went through the same process. Several months later, they decided to fly me in for an in-person interview after I completed a design test. The test was quite long, and many questions had overlapping requirements if not read carefully. The phone interviews were pretty standard, but the in-person one was fairly intense.
- Can you describe a scenario using Star Wars assets where Darth Vader is the primary antagonist?
