Cloud Accounting Specialist
The hiring journey is pretty comprehensive. You'll get to chat with HR, your direct manager, and even the CEO. They share a lot of useful info and ask you questions specific to the job. They also dive deep into the company culture and make sure you understand the company's values.
- When closing out the month, do you find yourself looking more at the P&L or the Balance Sheet?
Cloud Accounting Specialist
It's a multi step process. First, a recorded one way video. Then an HR screening via Zoom, followed by a Zoom interview with the manager(s). The final interview is with their CEO.
- Can you walk me through how you manage multiple clients and your general work process for doing so?
HR Coordinator
The interview process started with me recording myself answering about 4-5 questions. After they reviewed my recording, I got a call for a one-on-one interview. The interview concluded with a quick chat about the next steps, which would be an interview with a bigger group of my potential colleagues. They also let me know to follow up if I didn't hear back in about a week. I sent a thank you email that day. After a little over a week with no word, I followed up by email. The very next business day, I was informed they wouldn't be moving forward with my application for the role. I replied asking about what key qualifications I was missing. I never got a response.
- Can you tell me which of our company values resonates most with you and explain your reasoning?
Senior Accountant
I applied for a remote Senior Accountant role via Upwork. The interviewer, Michael, asked me to use his own app for a video call, which I did despite Upwork warnings about keeping communication within the platform. He mentioned his preference for this. The interview went well, and he indicated that even if this role didn't work out, his firm had ample work and my knowledge of MS Dynamics Great Plains would be very useful. He made it sound like the job would start soon, though I know nothing is guaranteed. He sent a LinkedIn invite to 'keep in touch' and said a background check would be emailed shortly. Nothing came of it, and after a month, he said the client chose another firm. I've always been told that recruiters value candidates and follow up, but Michael's actions were different. I followed up again a few months later professionally, asking about other opportunities since he mentioned a potential flow of work and staying in touch. I even sent holiday wishes. No response, so I followed up one last time on LinkedIn, partly because my Upwork account was having issues. He never replied. I later found out he had me removed from Upwork for following up, which he had invited me to do, apparently against their rules. I didn't know this. Instead of communicating directly, this response felt like a way to handle things digitally without considering the human aspect. It's disheartening how people can avoid direct communication and simply disconnect, causing harm without apparent remorse. At the time, I was running my own business, though my divorce had financially devastated me. I had been an Accounting Manager previously and have strong references and achievements. I was actively operating my business when I spoke with Michael. Losing my business and facing near homelessness with my son due to the divorce, and now raising him as a single mom, has been incredibly difficult. I've been working 60-hour weeks at minimum wage and lost my car. Living in a town with no public transport, accounting jobs are a significant drive away, making Upwork, which hosts most remote jobs, crucial for me. I invested considerable time in my Upwork profiles, resume, and even created a professional video and completed extra tests. I was shocked by this treatment. Being removed from the platform was unwarranted, extremely damaging, and stemmed from a lack of empathy and poor communication. When I regain my standing as a Finance Director or Accounting Manager, I will forgive but never forget this deplorable experience.
