First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at RBS Greenwich Capital.
Trading Analyst
I spoke with a trader, who seemed to be the head of the desk, and an HR person. First, I was asked some general questions about my background and my motivation for wanting to be a trader. Then, the trader asked me a few technical questions related to their product. I got them right, but it felt like they were looking for a fast and confident answer, not just the correct one. It was pretty obvious the trader was the main decision-maker. When I followed up, they told me they passed on me because I didn't seem aggressive enough, which was a bit confusing given how composed they were during the interview.
- What is the current central bank interest rate in Australia?
Analyst
The interview process was very focused on fit, with minimal technical questions. They seemed to take a really comprehensive approach to interviewing for analyst roles, which I found quite refreshing and unusual among the big banks. Basically, they just want to know if they'd be happy having you on their team for the long term.
- What are your thoughts on the current price of gold?
- Can you explain your interest in sales & trading?
- What led you to choose your particular school and major?
Summer Associate
I was contacted by the company via my university's resume book for a role supporting a trading desk. The interview questions were quantitative but not overly challenging. Reading "Heard on the Street" to boost your finance/math knowledge should be sufficient. I wasn't asked any extremely difficult quant problems or derivation questions, but I did get general probability and statistics questions that fit a trading desk role.
- Were the questions about as difficult as the average ones in "Heard on the Street: Quantitative Questions from Wall Street Job Interviews"?
- Were there also some bond math questions asked?
- Did the questions include general probability and statistics, fitting for a trading desk?
Assistant Professor
The interview process involved a discussion about student experiences and how you handled challenging situations. It also included a reflection exercise on the recruitment process itself.
- Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult student.
- How and why would you inform your team about a tight deadline?
- What attracts you to this institution?
