Systems Engineer
I was first contacted by a company recruiter for a preliminary chat, and then I was passed along to the hiring manager. The first round was with the hiring manager, the second round was with the team, and the third round was an onsite interview. The team seemed really interested and keen, but unfortunately, it wasn't the right industry fit for me.
- Can you tell me about your five-year plan?
Management
Phone interview followed by a video interview. During the initial interview, they were really playing mind games, implying I was a hot commodity and another employer would lose me if they didn't act fast. After I sent thank you notes, I was told I'd hear about the next steps soon. I ended up waiting over 10 days to follow up. Then, I was told twice that an update was ready and I'd get it that day or the next. The first time, I waited a week with no word before following up. The second time, it was almost two weeks before I followed up again. Finally got a call back, they apologized for the wait and said I wasn't chosen. When I asked why, to help me out, they said they had to take a call and would call me back. A few minutes later, they called back and said it was 'timing'. Since I applied right after the job was posted, interviewed twice on their schedule, and was available immediately, I asked them to explain 'the timing'. Again, they said they had to take a call and would call back. It's been 30 days, and that call never happened, right after they apologized for doing the same thing twice.
- What other job offers do you have?
- Where do you stand with other companies you're interviewing with?
- Can you update me on the status of your other job opportunities?
IT Support
The first interview was with IT, set up by the internal recruiter. It was a mix of technical and more casual questions about my work ethic and attitude. After that went well, I had a second interview with HR. That also seemed to go well, and they said I'd hear back in a week, but I never did, and my follow-up questions about feedback were ignored.
- Questions about entry level sysadmin tasks with Windows server?
- Questions about working with virtual machines (VMs)?
- Questions about basic networking?
Engineer
After submitting my CV and cover letter through a university contact, I had a panel interview with four staff members. They were at different seniority levels and asked various questions about my CV and potential intern activities. We talked about recent university projects, their success or failure, and how I reviewed them to ensure future success.
- Regarding the project you mentioned on your CV about designing and building a functional object, how successful was it?
- What did you learn from that project to improve for the future?
- Did it fail in any predicted vulnerable areas?
