First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Rand McNally.
Account Executive
The interview process was streamlined. The interviewers were engaged and seemed keen on building the team the right way. They were polite, cooperative, and clear about the stages involved. Speaking with them and negotiating was a great experience.
- What are your long-term career aspirations?
Tech Lead
So we had 5 interviews, each lasting 30 minutes. First was a Technical Interview with the architect. Then a Database Interview with the DBA. After that, I spoke with the Product Owner. Then there was a Manager round, followed by a Sr. Manager round. Finally, an HR interview.
- Can you explain design patterns?
- What is the factory pattern?
- What's the difference between an Abstract class and an Interface?
Vice President, Human Resources
It was a long and not very useful interview process. I talked with several business leaders, including the CIO, the interim CFO, and the CEO. They knew I was an HR change agent and that they needed someone to help their struggling business. I really liked my dinner with the CEO, but the other leaders seemed pretty insecure. The interim CFO was really weak and wouldn't stick to an opinion, making her hard to work with. The CIO was a great hire from another IT company, but if they keep skimping on talent, he probably won't stay.
- How would you contribute to this organization?
Senior Android Engineer
Applied for the Senior Android Engineer position at Mcnally Rand. Got contacted by HR within a few days of applying. After a 30-minute initial chat, HR took 3-4 weeks to get back and set up a Skype interview with the Product Manager for the first round (30 mins). This PM was friendly and asked relevant questions, and I felt my past experience was a good fit. HR then scheduled four more 3-hour Skype interviews. Round 2 was with an Android developer (30 mins) who asked about my past jobs and management experience; it went well and I learned a lot about the company. Round 3 was a 45-minute interview with a senior person who asked about handling critical situations, which was helpful and went well. I felt confident about getting the job. Round 4 was with a really unprofessional person (45 mins). They asked me to talk about myself, but interrupted to ask about my undergrad. They seemed more interested in my personal life and education than my career. After 30 mins of friendly chat, they abruptly changed tone and questioned my previous project design rudely, doubting my methods and getting angry, refusing to accept my reasoning, almost fighting in the last 15-20 mins. Round 5 was with a nice guy (30 mins) who asked about work culture and management; it went well, but I knew the previous round made getting the job tough.
- What is your management style?
- How would you approach fixing an issue that cannot be reproduced?
- What is your motivation for applying to this role?
