First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Rainforest Action Network.
Administrative Assistant
So there were 4 rounds of interviews. They had staff from different teams show up so that way the staff would have buying for who is being hired which I thought was really cool and then I spoke to folks for three rounds of interviews one hour each.
- Tell me about your experience handling conflict.
Policy Director
The interview process was pretty average. They were more interested in my experience with direct action campaigning than the subject matter itself. It's a very leftist organization that truly lives its values, and the people there are lovely. The team is small but passionate, though they seem a bit disorganized.
- Have you participated in direct action?
Program Assistant
After applying online, I heard back from the program coordinator about a week and a half later. The initial phone screening was brief, around 15 minutes, covering basic things like my availability, interest in the organization, and my skills. This was followed by an in-person interview with four staff members where they used a consistent set of questions and a scoring system for all candidates. The vibe was pretty relaxed, and I got to ask them questions too. They let me know within a few days if I'd be moving on to a second round, but I didn't get that offer.
- How would you approach running a campaign focused on climate or energy issues?
Executive Programs Coordinator
The interview process for this role took some time because they wanted to make sure they found the best person. You have to be a good fit, even if you're the only candidate. The first step was a phone interview where I had to share my understanding of RAN and talk about my past work experience. They also checked if my salary and benefits expectations were aligned. The second round was in the office with three people, covering questions about why I wanted the job, time management, management styles, decision-making, and task preferences. The third round was also in the office, with eight people including the ED, focusing on my interests, prioritization skills, what I want in a boss, my definition of success in the first year, how I stay balanced, and my long-term plans with RAN. They seem like a great company that cares about employee well-being and work-life balance, offering comp days for extra hours worked.
- How would you like to be introduced to the team as a new hire, and what would make you happy to hear about yourself?
