First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Raindrop Marketing.
Marketing
After an initial HR screening, the next step is a take-home case study project, which is a significant time commitment. You only have about two days to finish it, and it requires several hours of work. Even though you won't be presenting it to anyone, you should put in your best effort. While some people have concerns about case studies, they are usually asked later in the process when you're a finalist. It felt like they were asking for hours of work without even guaranteeing an interview, which made me feel undervalued. It was my choice to do it, but it felt exploitative given the current job market. They seem to be taking advantage of people's desperation.
- Can you tell me about your background and why you're interested in our company?
Art Director
I got an email asking me to chat with their recruiter. The call went fine. Then they hit me with this Art Direction Assessment, which was a huge task but I was game. I put in 30 hours of work (unpaid) to make a photoshoot style guide deck for a fake brand, and even wrote copy. I'm an art director, not a copywriter! They said my design stuff was good, but the copy wasn't. No duh! I'm not a copywriter. So, ADs and graphic designers, watch out! I wouldn't have wasted my unpaid time on this agency if I'd known. Plus, they took over 3 weeks to respond, and I had to chase them.
- Can you describe how you conceived the idea for the ad you created for a past agency, as shown in your portfolio?
Motion Designer
Applied online and got a phone screen in about a week. The HR manager was super nice, maybe the nicest I've ever met. After that, I had an assessment that took around 10 minutes, then a panel interview. The assessment was cool – they asked how they could help me grow. Just standard questions, and everyone was friendly. I didn't get picked, but they let me have another call to talk about how I could get better. They said something interesting like, 'the team decided this position would limit your growth as a designer,' which was why I wasn't chosen.
- Why did you choose to apply for this specific role?
- Describe how you would manage a project with a very short deadline, like one due in 24 hours.
- How can Raindrop help you develop your skills as a designer?
Brand Director
I had some simple screening questions, but the first interviewer gave me an awkward, uncomfortable vibe. It felt way too 'formal' and 'cold.' Future rounds involved a vague project and an even vaguer presentation. All the interviewers seemed uninterested and preoccupied, including the CEO, who also gave off uncomfortable vibes. They spent most of the time touting their culture and new work, but their hiring practices could really use the most help. It's not a good system, and they don't follow up with candidates, which says a lot about how their business functions. I think it's better to work at more established companies.
