First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Railinc.
Marketing Specialist
It was pretty chill. They asked a lot about my experience that was already on my resume. I got emailed by a different person than my interviewer. They didn't go into great detail on the position itself. But they did get back to me quickly about whether or not I was moving on in the process.
- Can you describe a time you worked with a large group of people?
Customer Success Specialist
First, there was a 30 minute phone call with the CSC manager. After that, I was invited to an in-person panel interview with the manager and 3 other upper-level employees. They want STAR responses and to leverage past projects. If you don't have a specific response for the situation, think of the closest thing to it as long as it show cases the skills they're asking for. It might be intimidating but everyone is friendly. Also, have some engaging questions lined up, especially ones that show you've done your research on Railinc and the freight rail industry. So, come prepared, professional, and with a positive attitude and you will do great!
- Can you describe a situation where you identified a process in your job that could be improved?
- Can you share an example of a time you improved a process in your job using the STAR method?
- Could you tell me about a time you improved a job process?
Administrative Assistant
I had a phone screen with HR, who was nice and asked the usual stuff. They asked if I could train for a bit and if I was cool with not having a great schedule for the first three months, but mentioned leadership roles could open up in about a year. Then, I had an in-person interview which was tough, with three managers from different departments. They seemed really uninterested and like I was wasting their time during the hour-long interview. It wasn't a friendly vibe. They asked logic and behavioral questions. It was harder than the phone call, but not super hard. They asked what salary I wanted, but the hiring range was way lower than I thought, and the benefits weren't great.
- What's your approach when facing urgent issues where you don't have the answer?
- Would you be amenable to a few weeks of training?
- Are you comfortable with a non-ideal work schedule for the initial three months?
Java Developer
I went through a recruiting company and then had an in person interview. The interview was pretty disorganized with three people asking random things about my background and then basic questions. The basic questions were easy, like things you can find with a quick search, mostly basic OO questions. Towards the end, I got a couple of questions that didn't make sense and I'm not sure the interviewer knew how to explain them. I found out later they were looking for specific method calls and I was disqualified for not knowing them offhand. The architect seemed annoyed to be there and answered my questions gruffly. I wasn't shown out of the office, which felt disrespectful. I felt like the job would be taking instructions and not thinking. The development staff seemed less experienced than I'd like. I decided to reject any offer, but they felt the same way. I was relieved, and found a better job the next day.
