It was a casual 3-person panel interview, with some recruiter calls. They asked about my work history and for examples of my experience, as well as time management. The conversation felt like it was leaning towards questions about how I'd deal with a lot of staff conflict, which seems to be a big part of the role. They were upfront about the process and procedures, which helped me understand the job better.

This was an untimed, online strengths-based assessment, similar to what large consulting firms use. While it allowed for flexibility, the tasks were demanding and didn't give me a chance to explain my thinking or show policy knowledge. I found it didn't suit my working style and raised this, but was told I couldn't get adjustments or retake it. They said I should have known this beforehand, which felt like it ignored accessibility and inclusion. The rejection was a generic email from the recruitment team, making it impossible to follow up or find accountability. It felt like a formality rather than a genuine process for a program focused on future policy thinkers. If you don't fit a specific mold, expect a process that talks about inclusion but doesn't practice it.

I was applying for a Graduate Data Engineer job with the Queensland Government (DNRMMRRD). After they looked at my resume, I had to send them a newer resume, a cover letter to introduce myself, and show I could work in Australia. A week later, I got to chat with the main Data Analyst, a manager, and someone from the team. We had a nice chat, they asked me about different situations and my past experiences, and it was a pretty good time overall.

I had a phone interview with the agency, then a face-to-face with them. After that, it was a face-to-face with the employer, followed by a second interview with department members. It also included a tour of the office and introductions to other departments. The whole process was thorough and on time, though there was a lengthy wait at one point. They confirmed with both a phone call and an email.
