I recently applied online for a data-focused role at Prosper Marketplace and heard back in about 1–2 weeks. The process was pretty structured and moderately challenging, with a big emphasis on SQL and analytical skills. First up was a 30-minute recruiter phone screen where we talked about my background, past projects, and general fit. They also touched on my experience with SQL, Python, and handling large datasets.

I did an HR screening. Then, a few days later, I got asked to set up an interview with the hiring manager. The next day, they wanted to reschedule for later. But then, the day after that, they cancelled the interview saying the role was filled. It felt dishonest and not transparent about their open roles. They should not waste people's time if they already have candidates in mind and are close to a decision.

The interview process had 5 rounds in total. These included 2 coding rounds, 1 System design round, 1 round focused on SQL and API design, and a Manager round. When it came to discussing numbers, the recruiter was quite aggressive. She didn't even congratulate me on the offer and rudely suggested I "shouldn't consider accepting the offer." In my opinion, accepting an offer should make both parties happy. Her view was that negotiation means the candidate has to concede while the company stays firm. This isn't fair when neither side is willing to compromise.

The interview process started with an HR screening that checked my personality and tech skills. Then there was a technical phone call to check my harder skills and knowledge. After that, I had a take-home test which involved statistical programming and report writing. The final stage was a remote panel interview that lasted 4.5 hours with breaks and involved 5 interviewers, each spending 15-45 minutes with me. I got positive feedback on my take-home test from the director, who mentioned my work was similar to how they operate at Prosper. I was confused when I didn't get an offer, and HR said I failed the technical tests without providing more details, even though I felt I got about 90% correct. The only positive aspect was the speed of the process.
