First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Propel Schools.
4th Grade Teacher
First, we did a round robin style Q&A in a group. Then, I taught a demo lesson and had an interview after that. After those steps, I was told I was hired into a 'hiring pool,' and then people with openings could hire from that group.
- What would you say to a parent if you had to call them about a student's grade issue?
Substitute Teacher
I talked to HR and it felt good, they were reassuring. Then they told me I'd do a recorded-video interview. The instructions said I'd have 5 tries per question, but when I started, I only got one try per question. No prep info was given either. This was my first time applying, so I was unprepared. It feels weird to not talk to a human for a job that needs a lot of interaction with people, unless they want me to teach via video.
- Tell me about a time you used empathy to help a student learn.
High School Teacher
The interview started with a video call, which someone else described. Then came the part where you have to teach a class. It's normal to be asked to teach a class, but in this case, you had to do it without any introduction to the students, no clue about their subject knowledge, and no idea about the usual ways to manage the classroom. You were given a topic, but couldn't tell if the students were ready for it. It seems like each teacher teaches their own curriculum at their own speed, so you can't ask 'where are you in the book?' to know what they've learned. You also had no idea about normal or acceptable behavior in the classroom. It felt harder than being a substitute teacher, because at least as a sub, you get a lesson plan and can focus on keeping order and helping students who want to work. I thought the process wasn't well planned. My advice for the sample lesson is to ask to visit a class first, maybe the one you'll teach. This way, you can see the discipline standards and where the students are with the subject before you start teaching.
- Can you tell me what you know about Propel?
Recruiter
It was a really long interview process. There were four people interviewing me in total, and each of them asked me about 5-6 questions. They really expect you to answer their questions perfectly on the spot, and it's frustrating because they can't even answer the questions you ask them at the end.
- Can you tell me about your strengths and weaknesses?
