Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Primark.
Visual Merchandiser
Got a surprise call from the deputy manager to chat about my right to work, if I was okay with the hours (4 week rota, weekdays plus every other Saturday, 6am-12pm, with one weekend off), why I wanted the job, and my current role. They sounded nice, then called a few days later to invite me for an in-person interview with the store manager. The store manager asked a lot of inappropriate and personal questions about my current job and the state of retail, which I didn't like and weren't relevant. They asked general stuff like why I want to work for Primark, how I'd handle customers, and about my experience, which we'd already covered on the phone. I was told I'd hear back the next day if I was moving on to a second interview for mannequin dressing. I never heard back, but got an email a week later saying they weren't proceeding. Total waste of time, felt like they had their minds made up and just wanted to pry into my current job. Why even interview?

Visual Merchandiser
The interview took place in the store. First, I was asked some questions to get more info. Then, I had 20 minutes to put together an outfit using stuff from the store. It was a test of my fashion sense, knowledge of materials, and how fast I work. I had to quickly find clothes that looked good together to meet what the client wanted. It really showed my skills and efficiency.
- What makes you want to work for Primark and what skills do you bring?
- Tell me about a time you used a customer profile to help solve a problem.
- Can you describe a situation where you disagreed with a coworker?
Visual Merchandiser
They conduct 2 to 3 interviews, asking for a general overview of your educational background and acquired skills. Afterwards, they pose questions related to your previous work experiences and challenging situations encountered in the workplace. Their aim is to understand who you are and how you manage to react under high stress or difficult circumstances. Essentially, the selection process is quite thorough and not overly complex. Overall, I'm satisfied.
- Tell me about a typical day in your work.
