First, I had a phone call, then a Zoom meeting with the executive director, the head of HR for PC-USA, and some support people from the National Office.

Everyone was super friendly and the vibe was relaxed, like they really wanted to know about my history and what I could bring to the company. I got to ask a bunch of questions while I was there and got solid answers. It felt way more laid-back than interviewing at a public company.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

The process for finding a pastor in the PCUSA is kind of a mess and not super helpful. We have to fill out a resume that has strict limits on how much we can write, plus a list of what jobs we've done and what we want to do. Churches looking for a pastor do the same thing. The way they match people up is kinda forced and leads to a lot of mismatches. After that, the churches have to reach out to the pastors they think might be a good fit.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • The teams looking for a pastor usually don't ask very imaginative or fun questions.
  • I recall one interview where a particular woman asked very specific and in-depth questions.
  • I later asked her why she was so precise, and she mentioned she was a Federal Court Judge... wow, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be on trial in front of her.

It started with me sending a PIF, which is a denomination-specific resume, to the church. Then their nominating committee looked it over and decided to have a phone interview with me and most of them. They asked a mix of big theological questions and some "how would you deal with X situation?" questions. After the phone chat went well, the committee asked me to come visit for a weekend so I could meet more of the congregation, and they could meet me, and we'd have a face-to-face interview. This interview was pretty similar to the phone one, but some questions were more specific since we'd gotten to know each other a bit better by then.

  • In a situation where two members are in conflict, how would you go about mediating it?
  • From your perspective, what are some ways someone like me could contribute to the church?
