I sent in my resume after meeting HR at a campus fair. About four months later, HR got in touch. First, I talked to an HR analyst who asked me some standard STAR method questions, like about my leadership style and why I'm interested in the public sector. Two weeks after that, the department reached out for another interview. This one was with two directors, and it followed the usual STAR method but leaned more towards technical skills. They asked me about databases and how I would analyze things.

The interview was very professional. They started with some questions about my coursework knowledge. Then it moved on to standard behavioral questions and questions about my past experiences. The interviewers made me feel comfortable during the whole process. They did a great job explaining the position and what the key aspects of the job are. I was pretty shocked when I got a rejection letter because I thought the interview went really well. I had interned there before, so it was even more surprising. Still, the process was a really positive experience and I was happy to get the chance. I didn't realize until I got to the interview that they were only hiring one person for each department.

The first interview was a screening with HR. They asked basic, simple questions from a rubric, and it seemed very structured. About two weeks later, I was contacted for a second interview with the mechanical department. They asked similar questions, focusing on thermodynamics and heat transfer.

Given 15 years of design experience, this wasn't terrible, but they provided an RFI to respond to. I can see how most people might not like being put on the spot with something like that.
