Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Engineer
I applied in late November, months before the February deadline, and received contact from two departments around the end of March. One department conducted a phone interview, while the other had me come in for an in-person interview. Both interviews were standard 30-minute behavioral interviews. About two weeks after the second interview, both departments extended offers, and I accepted the one that best aligned with my career aspirations.
- What is your proficiency level with Excel?
- Can you share an experience of working collaboratively within a team?
Engineer
I applied for a few engineering roles here and went through the interview process for one of them. Although I didn't get the job, which is fine, I experienced some really demeaning comments from the hiring manager. For example, they said something like 'well you have to do real work not just sit around and file paper,' which was pretty off-putting, especially since I'm an experienced engineer. That remark alone made me realize I probably didn't want to work for that person. The company seemed okay though. I didn't get this job but landed one at Lyft, so I'm good. Just wanted to share my thoughts on the kind of people they seem to be hiring as managers.
- What's your background and experience?
- What's your educational history?
- Could you answer some technical questions related to engineering?
Engineer
I started with a phone interview with HR, which was pretty straightforward. After that, they invited me for an in-person interview. The hiring manager asked most of the questions, all focused on my past experience. The HR person also asked some standard questions.
- Can you tell me about your accomplishments?
