First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at PlayStation.
UX Researcher
I was ghosted after several interviews and tens of hours of my life spent in interviews and take home tasks. I had to write a full presentation on usability issues for one game, presented it to the hiring manager and a senior person, and never heard back. This was after a first take home task that was also quite complex and long to fill in. The whole process also took almost 2 months from start to finish, only to be ghosted.
- Can you tell me about your three favorite games of all time and explain your choices (under 100 words each)?
- Choose two recent games you've played and provide two examples of good and two examples of bad usability for each.
- Using one of the games you just analyzed, could you outline a usability study design for it?
User Researcher
The interview process included 4 stages. It started with an initial take-home task. Then, there were two interviews with senior employees. After that, a very long take-home assignment was given, which involved playing a game for 2 hours and then writing a detailed presentation about its usability issues. This presentation was then presented back. The whole process spanned over 4 months, from July 2022 when I applied, to September when I was contacted, and finally January 2023 when I was ghosted. I emailed multiple times but never received a response, which I found unprofessional and disrespectful, especially after investing so much time and effort. It would have been better to at least be informed if the role was filled or put on hold.
- Why are you interested in user research within the gaming industry?
UX Designer
The interview process was informative and got straight to the point. The recruiter and hiring manager were nice people, and they seemed really passionate about the work they do. It was cool to learn about the company culture and values, and it looks like a role with a lot of chances to grow.
- Tell me about yourself.
