Customer Success Manager
First, there was a Get to Know you interview, then a Long Task, followed by a Feedback interview, and finally a meet the CCO. It was a very informal style of interviewing where you talk about yourself and get to know the other person whilst they get to know you. You talk about customer success and the way you view it and the future of it etc.
- Can you share some examples of mistakes you've made previously?
- Tell me about your past experience.
- What does Customer Success mean to you?
Customer Success Manager
I was contacted by a recruiter for this role. Since I consult on the side and don't urgently need a job, I was very intentional about pursuing this opportunity with Planhat. I looked into their product, what the role entailed, and spent a lot of time talking with my potential manager. A heads-up for anyone considering this company: the CEO's actions and behaviors really show the company culture. In my final interview with him, he spent the whole time asking invasive personal questions unrelated to work and didn't let me ask about the team, culture, or product. His questions made me feel like he's building a company based on old-school ideas of overworking people, likely to the point of burnout, where productivity is measured by meetings and hours, not actual output. I suspect he struggled with the shift to remote work because it meant more autonomy, and he doesn't seem to trust or value his team's input. This is based on my experience: an hour with the recruiter, two hours with the manager, three hours on an assessment (1 hour prep, 2 live), and then 30 minutes with the CEO. Despite positive feedback and the hiring manager talking to my references about an offer, the CEO rejected me, saying I 'wouldn't be able to handle the fast pace.' Given my background – launching the iPhone at Apple, building CS teams acquired by FAANG companies, and scaling SaaS businesses to enterprise readiness with successful IPOs and billion-dollar acquisitions – I have to wonder what 'fast pace' they're actually referring to. It's a shame, but hopefully, this experience helps other candidates and their team be more respectful of everyone's time. Ultimately, I'm just glad I avoided another potentially toxic environment.
- What's the reason you haven't stayed at any job for longer than three years?
- My goal isn't to find someone who sees this as just a temporary 'gig' or is solely focused on an IPO; how do your personal and professional goals fit with that?
Customer Success Manager
I applied through their website and a recruiter contacted me a few days later to set up an initial interview. After I interviewed, I received an email three days later stating they weren't interested.
- Can you discuss the current KPIs you are working with?
