First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Pima County (Arizona).
Engineering Assistant
The interview had 2 interviewers and 1 EEO rep. They gave me a binder with all the interview questions that were asked and they score your responses to each question. The interview was about 40 minutes long with a mix of technical and behavioral questions for the role. I had a chance to ask the interviewers questions at the end if there was any time left.
- What makes you want this position and to work for Pima County?
Epidemiologist
The interview was weird. They had an internal auditor present to make sure it was "fair," but it just made the entire thing feel robotic and cold, like I wasn't talking to actual people. They allowed viewing the questions beforehand, but when I tried to ask a clarifying question about the role, the auditor informed me I couldn't ask anything. It was a terrible experience, and I won't be applying for another job with them.
- Can you tell me about your experience working in a fast-paced environment?
Library Technical Assistant
So, first you'll have a panel of 2-3 people and they'll give you a set amount of time to answer some questions verbally. You gotta act like they don't know anything about you 'cause they actually don't see your application until after the interview, they wanna see how you present yourself. Then, you'll go to a different panel of people for a one-on-one thing. Be polite and treat them like a library patron. Greet them, ask how you can help, and remember to just guide them, don't do the work for them! After all this, if you don't get the job, don't get discouraged, send an email asking what you could do better next time. For the first part, spread your answers out, don't rush, and try to sell yourself or explain more. Like, if you have 10 questions and an hour, spend about 6 minutes on each.
- What is your motivation for seeking employment with Pima County and what makes you a suitable candidate?
- How would you approach assisting a library patron?
- Can you share an example of when you successfully guided someone through a task without completing it for them?
Program Coordinator
I applied on April 12th and had my first interview on May 3rd. It was with two interviewers, and then there was a third person who shared their screen showing about 8 detailed questions related to the job. After that, on May 13th, I had another interview, which was a less formal phone call with the same two interviewers. This second interview focused more on behavioral questions, like how I'd handle a colleague frequently asking for help on my projects. They checked my references on May 22nd, but then on June 3rd, I was rejected because they felt my experience wasn't the best fit. Honestly, the interviews themselves weren't too tough, but the whole process felt really disorganized and uncertain. It was confusing to be rejected so late in the process after they'd already contacted my references, especially when they seemed to have trouble with my contact info even though it was in my application. I only found out about the second round because I followed up on my application status. It's probably a good thing they're finding someone else, even though I really need a job.
- Tell me about your background in program coordination and why you feel you're the top candidate for this position.
- What is your experience working in a fast-paced setting?
- Have you had any supervisory experience?
