First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Pier 1 Imports.
Assistant Manager
I applied online and completed an online questionnaire. Then I had a face-to-face interview with a manager. The interview seemed easy, and the manager was impressed with my skills and experience. Unfortunately, I was let down by the offer. It seems the company was really seeking a temporary employee and couldn't guarantee 25 hours per week. After the lengthy process, I was quite disappointed, feeling the manager genuinely wanted me to fill in so she could get some relief. She gave a weak reason about their systems being different and requiring learning, hence the reduced hours. Don't bother applying to this company; they put you through an extensive interview process that takes hours, only to offer a poor job.
- Could you answer some basic questions about management?
Manager
Applied online and got a call back super fast, within an hour. The first interview was a phone screen with standard questions from a list. It was really straightforward: asking why I wanted to work there, if I shopped there, for my definition of customer service, and how I'd handle a hypothetical situation. Super easy. Then there was a 1-on-1 interview that basically re-asked those same types of questions but focused on specific scenarios. A few days later, I interviewed with the regional manager. This one was a marathon, almost 2 hours! He asked really specific questions. I think it went on so long because we just hit it off immediately and had a great connection. He was really laid-back and pleasant to chat with. After he chatted with the store manager about my interview, I got the job offer. I figure the store manager just wanted to make sure I'd be a good fit for the team at that specific store.
- What is your motivation for applying to Pier 1?
- How do you define customer service?
Assistant Manager
It was an easy, relaxed process. I interviewed with the store manager and the district manager. They asked pretty much the same things, like describing my management style, if I had ever had to fire anyone, and if I had experience opening credit cards. It was the typical stuff you'd get asked in a retail management interview.
- Can you describe your management style?
- Tell me about a time you had to fire someone.
- What is your experience with opening credit cards?
