& Process

The interview process involved 3 interviews, spaced about 1-2 weeks apart. It included general questions about managing operations, team leadership, and pet care. I spoke with a recruiter first, then another GM, and finally the DM. I also got a tour of the facility after the interview with the GM.

It was a pretty chill interview. Mostly they wanted to hear about your experience with dogs, but if you've worked with other animals like livestock, that's a bonus. They also asked if I knew how to handle dog fights. I was a little concerned when they asked about my preferred hours, but they seemed really flexible and were happy to adjust my schedule if needed.

I had an initial interview that went well, and then they asked me to come back for a working interview the next day. I got there at 6:30 and found out I'd be there for 6 hours. Turns out 3 people called out, and I think they wanted me to help cover for them. They mentioned they don't really care if a shift is covered, and the shift lead on duty does most of the work. The job involves interacting with dogs, but there's no specific training for it and not much interaction anyway. One person said if you're not comfortable with dogs, you don't have to interact with them, the shift lead will handle it. I ended up cleaning kennels, doing dishes and laundry, and assisting with individual playtime. The dogs that pay extra for group playtime were just left outside alone until someone monitored them. I also learned that despite my previous experience as a kennel manager, I was the only one there who had a 'working interview'. I disagreed with some company policies, and the fact that so many people were quitting made me hesitant, so I turned down the job.

I interviewed at a Virginia location and ended up working 8 hours for free. The employees were very unknowledgeable when it came to dog behavior and health. The dogs are left unsupervised in the outdoor play yard. They bring 1 or 2 dogs in at a time, let them loose, and go back inside the building to get more. Then the attendant would sit in the play yard for however long they decided then would put the dogs away. They lie to the customers about playtime and packages. People who paid for deluxe packages with playtime included would find out that their dog was marked as “aggressive or unmanageable” when that most likely wasn’t the case. They wouldn’t call or notify the clients either. Most of the time the dog was anxious, or high energy. It came down to the kennel workers canine intelligence and work efficiency. They were very short staffed, and when asked why so many people were leaving the girl I was shadowing told me it was due to management and pay. I wasn’t notified when showing up for the interview that I would be there for 8 hours. Usually a working interview is 2-3 hours max. Overall do not work here and definitely do not send you dogs here for any reason.
