First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Personal Capital.

So it was a pretty standard interview process. They did ask me one question that I felt was a bit out of line, asked with a really serious tone. The interviewers seemed to lack sales-oriented personalities, more like managers. After an initial FaceTime chat, they set up a mock call, which I believe was the last stage. Unfortunately, I had to cancel the mock call because of a scheduling conflict with my other job, and after that, I never heard back. I wasn't too bothered though, as the compensation plan didn't seem that great from what I recall.

I first talked to HR. The first part was checking my background. The second half was about choosing between service or sales. I didn't know much about either, so she explained them and asked which I preferred. It felt a bit random so early on. I picked sales. Then I had a 30-minute call with the hiring manager. It was a very quiet interview. Mostly just one question: why do you want this job? He wasn't looking for long answers or much talk about my background, his, or details about the company or how I'd fit in.
- Why do you want to work in sales?

Interviewed with someone, they didn’t read my resume, didn’t know what the CFA or CFP was or the process to obtain either, they did explain the role and the salary base 60k 15 bps for anything you sold as a one time payment plus a little more after a huge hurdle. Basically you’d have to sell 30 million a year to make over 100k, doubtful anyone makes money there, their portfolios are mot horrible from ones my current firm ACAT’d in, but they seem to lack any real relationships with clients or advisers. Life’s a people game if you’re a robo advisor with slight human touches no one’s going to pay you for long over 30 bps. I’d short the company if they were public, don’t see the business model working long term. I’d bet their CFA/portfolio manager team are all super smart, but people invest with people they like and trust, not a one time Charlie salesperson. Have to say I am glad I didn’t get an offer.
- Can you walk me through your resume?
