First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at PernixData.
Kernel, Storage, and Distributed Systems Engineer
Applied online and got a call from the recruiter to set up a phone interview. The interviewer started by asking about my background and work experience, which seemed unrelated to the role I applied for. I felt his interest in the interview waned after that. Then he asked some standard questions like reversing a linked list and the producer-consumer problem, which I managed to answer. He then briefly described the role before ending the call. I didn't hear back, and after a week, when I followed up with the recruiter, I received a generic email stating there wasn't a position suitable for my background.
- Standard questions were asked, mostly because the interviewer was not interested in my profile from the start.
Sales
I was contacted by some colleagues in the Industry to discuss a role at Pernix data. It was extremely difficult to schedule time with the VP to discuss the role , he was very unresponsive. Once the call was scheduled, he was late for the call, short and not engaging at all. I sent thank you notes, information regarding business plans and not even a thank you or any kind of a acknowledgement that he read the information I put together. After our second discussion he mentioned he would get back to me in two days, never heard from him so I followed up with him to let him know I was just sending him a courtesy note from our previous discussion. He moved on with another canidate, which I understand.. but why not be respectful and professional and just send out a quick note? Ive hired several people in my career, and I think its a professional courtesy to follow up with candidates if you decide not to move forward with them

Automation Engineer
I was first reached out to by a recruiter on LinkedIn. After sending in my resume, I got selected for a phone screen that went well and included a question about tree data structures. Then, I had a 2.5-hour phone interview with three interviewers covering CS fundamentals and company/product info. I was then selected for another 4-hour phone screen with four interviewers, focusing on testing and Python scripting. They decided I hadn't been tested enough on operating systems and product knowledge, so they gave me time to study. I had about 3 days to prepare because I had another offer. I had one last 1-hour phone screen, which went well, and I got an offer. They only do phone screens because they only do onsite interviews for local candidates.
- They make sure they test all the fundamentals and your genuine interest in their product and the technology aspect of it.
- No surprise questions as such.
- Know your data structures.
Technical Support Engineer
The interview process at PernixData was fun and very unique. The CEO contacted me directly on LinkedIn asking if I would be willing to chat with him about an opportunity. After a very nice chat with him, I had some very entertaining conversations with some of his engineers, as they gauged my technical skills. These talks were informal and very friendly. Every contact with the staff at PernixData was very enjoyable.
- I was asked questions that challenged the details about VMware's vmkernel interaction, which stretched my current skill set.
