After being referred, it took about 2-3 weeks to hear back from the hiring manager. Then, there were two interviews spaced about a week apart. The first interview was a technical one with two Senior Financial Analysts, lasting an hour. Even though I didn't know everything in detail, I could talk about general concepts. It was intense, even with my 10 years of financial services experience. Right after that, there was a personal interview with the group head and another employee, also about an hour long. The second interview was more personal and relaxed, lasting about an hour. I met with the Director, Deputy Director, and Supervisory FA. About 10 days after the last interview, I got a tentative offer. I declined it to negotiate salary to match my current pay, which took another 10 days and required me to show pay stubs. Overall, it was a good but challenging experience, both technically and in terms of patience. The people there seem relaxed and educated.

So the whole hiring thing for a senior IT project manager was pretty involved. I applied through USAJobs.Gov. After waiting about two months, I finally got a call from HR for a phone screen. Then, a couple of weeks later, they set up an interview with a panel. It took another five weeks to get the offer, mostly because of some veteran preference policy. They did adjust my salary though, after I showed them my SF-50.

It was a short interview, about 30 minutes. They asked easy questions, just going over my background and skills. I talked a lot about my experience and it felt more like a chat than an interview. There were more interviewers than I thought there would be.

The interview process was pretty fast in terms of response time, about a week after the interview. However, it took about two months for HR to forward my application.
