First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board.
Sales Associate
The interview process involved a straightforward in-person meeting. They asked situational questions about potential scenarios you might encounter. They also inquired about your past experience and how it could be applied to this role. Later, I received a callback confirming they wanted to move forward.
- If you were occupied with a task and a customer required assistance, what action would you take?
Clerk
I applied online via the Civil Service website. Then I took a test in Harrisburg, and got my scores the next day online and in the mail. About two weeks later, I got a survey about my availability, sent it back, and got a call the following Monday to set up an in-person interview for the next Monday. After the interview, I got a conditional job offer pending a background check. It's important to know that sometimes people wait months to hear back, but I applied and tested in October and interviewed in November, so I guess they were getting ready for the holidays.
- Tell me about your customer service skills.
- What's your experience with teamwork?
- How would you deal with a conflict with a coworker?
Clerk
You start by signing up online for a test at a state testing center. If you can't make it to your scheduled test, there's an option to show up anyway and see if there are any no-shows you can fill in for. They tell you your score right away and also mail it to you. If your score is good enough, they give you a website where you can pick which counties you want to work in. You'll only get job offers from the counties you picked. After you choose your counties, they'll mail you offers for specific stores within a couple of weeks. This offer is for a 'home store' where you'll spend most of your time. You can turn down any offer. You have to accept or decline an offer before they'll schedule an interview. If you don't respond, you're taken off the list and have to wait 3 months and retest before they'll consider you again. If you accept an offer, they'll call you to set up an interview date. The first interview is with a regional manager and an assistant. It's a pretty chill chat where they tell you a lot about the job. They'll definitely talk about how you might have to work at other locations sometimes, and that's not optional. After the interview, there's a two-week wait. Then, if you're accepted, you do a one-week paid training class, and then you start working the next week.
- Can you tell me about a time you made a mistake at work and what happened?
Human Resource Analyst
The process was very by-the-book. They stuck to pre-approved questions and didn't really go off-script. Everything had to be written down, so there wasn't much back-and-forth. The interviewers seemed professional during the interview but were friendly before and after.
- Can you share an experience where you had to manage a crisis with scarce resources, time, and help? Describe your actions and the outcome.
