Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Penguin Random House.
Marketing Executive
Zoom interview with two team members. They asked about my competencies (like "tell us about a time when..."), my experience with specific marketing platforms, and how I'd approach building connections and communications across the company.
- Could you explain how your background aligns with the requirements of this position?
- Can you share details about a marketing campaign you were involved in?
- Describe a situation where you had to collaborate with a difficult colleague.
Marketing Executive
I applied for the Marketing Executive role at Transworld, focusing on their online crime lists. The first step was a video interview, which I found challenging due to the lack of interaction. After that, I moved on to a physical interview at their Ealing offices. This interview was okay, but I was interviewed alongside another candidate for two Executive positions. It was tricky because the two managers had different expectations, making it hard to tailor my answers. I tried to stick to the original job description, but it turned out to be quite vague. From their questions, I realized they were looking for very specific experience that wasn't mentioned in the job description, which made preparation difficult.
- Can you describe a recent campaign you were involved in?
Marketing Assistant
My interview experience was really positive. If there is anything I can recommend to people interviewing at Penguin, it's that you should prepare a lot of behavioral questions such as "tell me about a time when.." Additionally, bring several copies of your resume to an in-person interview. I applied for 8 jobs at Penguin before getting an interview, and the only reason I actually got one is that I had a friend who worked directly with that imprint. First, I was emailed by the recruiter, which went really well. On the phone with me, she scheduled the in-person interview, which was a few days later. I was told the in-person interview would take about an hour, but I was there for 2 hours. When I asked for an update about three weeks later, I was told I was still being considered. However, I received a job offer from another publisher and reached out to Penguin to see if they wanted to counter. The recruiter was super nice and got back to me promptly. They decided not to offer and I ended up taking the offer from the other company.
- Can you describe a situation where you had to manage multiple projects simultaneously and explain your approach?
