First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Peabody.
Benefits Coordinator
The whole thing took about a month from applying to starting. It began with a phone call with the recruiter. It was mainly informational about Peabody, and they were good at communicating everything, even the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. After that, I talked to the Manager of HR Systems, the Manager of Employee Benefits, and three Benefits Specialists. All these interviews were pretty similar, mostly asking behavioral questions. Then, there was a second in-person interview with the Director of Hire-to-Rehire and the other two Benefits Specialists. These were also behavioral interviews.
- Can you describe how you manage and prioritize your tasks?
- What was a specific question that was posed to you?
Human Resources Employee Benefits Coordinator
The interviewer was pretty rude and kept pressing me about my last pay rate. He also asked multiple times why I left my previous job, like he was waiting for a different answer. I didn't get to ask any questions, and he did all the talking. He seemed way too focused on my past salary, the reasons for leaving, and why I was looking for more money than I made before. Given his attitude, I can see why the company only has a 2.9-star rating. I'd give it 0 stars. I'm definitely not applying here again.
- What was your previous salary, and did your former employer offer paid time off/vacation and a 401(k) match?
- Why did you leave your last position?
- Why are you asking for a salary that is higher than your previous salary?
Labor Relations Manager
It was horrific. The company had no clue how to professionally handle the recruitment and selection process. Poor Communication: Lack of Clear Instructions: Candidates are not given clear instructions on what to expect, where to go, or whom to meet. Emails are either confusing or non-existent. Delayed Responses: Emails and calls from candidates asking for clarification or confirming details go unanswered for days or weeks. Mixed Messages: Different representatives of the company provide conflicting information about the interview process, timings, and the role itself. Disorganized Scheduling: Last-Minute Changes: Interview dates and times are frequently changed at the last minute without reasonable explanation, causing inconvenience and confusion.
- Could you introduce yourself?
- What is your management style?
Director
The interviewer spent most of the time talking and seemed irritated by my responses, which struck me as unprofessional for a director-level role. We discussed compensation, and it wasn't competitive. On the plus side, no time was wasted. I appreciate the experience, but it's clear why Peabody is in Chapter 11. The coal industry is declining, and Peabody hasn't diversified.
- Can you provide your 20-second elevator pitch?
