I applied online and heard back from a recruiter pretty fast. They had me do a really detailed online assessment. After that, a phone interview was set up for about a week later. But then, an hour before the call, it got canceled because of a scheduling issue. It got rescheduled for two weeks out, which felt like a long time. The recruiter I was supposed to talk to wasn't even accepting the meeting invites. I got another job offer in the meantime and decided to withdraw my application. Honestly, I don't think they took me seriously as a candidate because of the lack of professionalism. If you have time to post on LinkedIn, you have time to accept a meeting invite.

The interview process was pretty standard for a small company, with one odd twist. It started with a 40-minute phone call with the recruiter. After discussing the role, they quickly scheduled me to meet with the CFO and what I thought was the CIO. I arrived early for the second interview, which started a bit late. This interview was with the internal recruiter, the CFO, and an external consultant – turns out it wasn't the CIO. The recruiter had double-booked himself and had to leave partway through. I spoke with the CFO and the consultant, who happened to work for a competitor of my current company. We had a good chat, and it lasted about 90 minutes. I didn't hear back from the recruiter for a few days, but I knew I was in the early stages of their in-person interviews. I reached out to the recruiter, who told me they were moving me to the next 'phase' – they wanted examples of process documentation I'd written. It was a strange and slightly questionable request, so I sent examples of public documents I'd authored instead. Again, silence, so I followed up a couple of times, but I always had to be the one to initiate contact. Finally, I reached out and was told they were going with other candidates. That's totally fine, but the communication throughout the entire process was really poor. Managing HR processes and candidate communication should be a top priority for HR.

The interview process was excellent. Initially, the recruiter asked questions related to my interests and suggested the most suitable role. This was followed by a video interview with friendly hiring managers who made me feel comfortable. Although I didn't get the job, I received detailed feedback and was encouraged to apply again. Paytech really focuses on the candidate experience.
