First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Pathrise.
Career Mentor
It started with a 30-minute phone interview with the Recruiter, who asked about my resume, experience, and interests. Then, there was a skills assessment using HackerRank and AirTable. The skills assessment felt unfair and irrational because Pathrise didn't give any guidance on using AirTable, so I had to rely on AirTable's own support pages. After that, I was supposed to have an interview with the Career Mentoring team, but I never got an invitation for a third interview, even with my 5+ years in Career Services in higher education and a doctorate. You can teach software skills, but you can't teach soft skills.

- Can you explain how your resume aligns with the requirements of this role?
Mentor
The interview process is intense, not difficult, but more pretentious. Newer people or those really wanting this job might spend hours preparing for the 6 interviews. I estimate up to 6 hours of prep time, but I didn't do it. The staff were cool, so I don't expect personality clashes, but Pathrise feels overbearing. Experienced professionals will see through it. I wanted to see it through to give them a fair shot, but after getting invited to the final 3-meeting, 3-hour interview, with required reading of their Manifesto, Values, and study guide, I knew I didn't want to join Pathrise.
- In two interviews, the first question was about handling conflict or pushback.
- How do you deal with someone you can't trust?
Admissions Manager
We started with a really long phone pre-screen with the recruiter. Then, there was a writing sample that felt like the longest email ever. After that, it was like homework from hell, researching the company. There was also a video of yourself. The main part was a 1.5-hour video call with 3-6 people. They said we could take breaks, but there really wasn't time, and they had to leave right after asking questions, so answering ours was tough. It also included a culture test, smart goals, and a mock call.
- Can you share an instance where you collaborated across different departments?
- What are your thoughts on adapting to change?
- Have you had prior experience working with a startup?
Principal Software Engineer
I first connected with Pathrise through A-List. The initial round involved getting acquainted with the team and understanding the company's mission, basically asking some resume-based questions. The person I spoke with was really welcoming. The second round was to check out my problem-solving and mentoring abilities. The final round, which was onsite, allowed me to meet many of the people I'd be collaborating with. They asked relevant questions about cultural fit, and I also worked through a problem with the CTO. The whole experience felt relevant to the role and not at all negative or degrading.
