The interview seemed to focus more on gathering requirements from customers than on SaaS configuration experience; my integration experience wasn't a factor. The whole interview wrapped up in about 9 minutes. I asked the recruiter about the company and the role, since she hadn't mentioned anything. She turned it back on me, asking what I wanted to know. I inquired about the parent company, Builders FirstSource, and the BLDR platform, and how they might affect future projects. I didn't feel a connection with the recruiter, and the conversation felt a bit strange. If direct communication with external customers is crucial, why invite me to interview when my resume doesn't highlight that?

I had a phone screening first, then I interviewed with some of the potential managers, and finally I met with my potential skip level manager. The questions were pretty standard, like why I wanted the job, what my background was, and how I'd deal with certain situations. Everyone I spoke with was really nice, showed up on time, and respected my time. It was a good experience overall, and the company seems great.

Technical Coding Behavioral

The interviews were pretty standard and pleasant overall. I had some live coding to show basic knowledge, but it wasn't overly difficult. I spoke with two senior developers and the hiring manager, and had a really good impression of them and the dev team. However, the HR experience was a letdown. They gave me misleading information about the salary range, saying the low end was 'low 80-thousands' during the first HR call. I have about a year of experience and would have been okay with that, maybe even less if they'd negotiated. The final offer was $71,500, which was about $10k less than the minimum they mentioned. When I asked why, the HR rep gave a vague answer about 'internal equity.' I mentioned a higher range and explained this would be a pay cut for me, providing reasons why I thought more was deserved. The next day, they refused to negotiate at all. I turned down the offer. Salary.com shows the median for a developer with 0-2 years is $77,490. Their offer was significantly below this, more like entry-level for someone with no experience. My previous job, with no prior experience, started at $70,000 and could go up to $75,000 after six months with good reviews. While the dev team seems great, be ready for HR issues and a lowball offer. It's a bad look to treat potential employees this way. It raises red flags about how the company treats its employees and its willingness to pay market rates or offer raises. Posting accurate salary ranges would save everyone time. Also, not insisting on such lowball salaries and refusing any negotiation is a poor long-term strategy. Low pay attracts less talented or desperate candidates, which can impact product quality and lead to higher turnover. People will leave if they know they can get paid better elsewhere, and the small raises offered by such companies won't bridge the gap.

I reached out to the recruiter directly and we set up a phone screen real quick. The recruiter was super informative and after that, my excitement for the job went up. Then I moved on to the hiring manager interview. They had to cancel the first time slot because of a scheduling conflict. The second time around, the interview felt super rushed. It seemed like the hiring manager wasn't really into it and didn't have time for the interview. They mentioned that they wouldn't be the one making the final hiring decision. The hiring manager also brought up an employee who apparently 'decided' they needed time off and 'didn't want' to work anymore. When I asked about their management style, they immediately went into how they handle issues with employees, saying they'll jump in to get things under control or take necessary actions when needed. It felt a bit weird to get such a negative response when I asked about management style. There were so many positive things they could have said. After the interview, my gut reaction was 'no way I could work for this person.' They cut me off when I was trying to answer questions and it felt like a really negative environment that I couldn't work in. I never heard back from anyone, which was totally fine by me.
