& Process

They asked me some basic questions about my past experience and how I deal with difficult behaviors. They also wanted to understand how I manage conflicts and lead people since I would have paraprofessionals working with me in the classroom.

After passing the initial screening, candidates go through a 15-20 minute panel interview where they answer 4-6 questions. Candidates are expected to use the STAR method for their answers, which cover topics like communication, team building, and instructional and operational expectations. The actual interview questions aren't the issue; it's the internal politics. Positions are often pre-determined, making the interview a mere formality. It's a waste of time unless you already have an inside connection. A recently retired administrator even brought this up at a board meeting, speaking privately to avoid repercussions.

First, check out the district job listings. Then, apply online and follow up with an email directly to the school. After that, you'll get a call from the school secretary or administration to set up an interview. You'll likely meet with a few people, such as assistant principals, educational coaches, department heads, or lead teachers on your team. Your skills and experience are important, but so is fitting in with the current team. We know our students well and can tell if they'll connect with your personality and teaching style. Be professional, but also show your real teacher personality that will engage your students.

You apply online. Then, you call the school you applied to and ask if the position is still open. If not, you repeat the process with another school. It's highly recommended to visit the school in person and hand them a paper resume. After getting a job offer, you'll need to complete a lot of paperwork and submit it to the central district office. Once that's processed, you can start.
