First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Paley Center For Media.
Intern
The interview process is pretty standard for the entertainment industry. They start by asking why you are there. They asked a lot of scenario-based questions about how you handle conflicts, find creative solutions, and manage your responsibilities. They also asked about what content you've been consuming.
- What are you watching these days?
Director of Public Programming
I had a 30-minute chat with an HR person. They were nice but didn't ask much about my job, duties, or why I want this role. They also didn't know why there are so many openings or what other jobs are in the department. I mostly talked about my experience while they chatted about a TV show related to my field.
- Can you describe your current responsibilities?
- What makes you want to work at the Paley Center?
Producer
I had an initial phone interview and then was invited for an in-person interview with the head of HR. The head of HR greeted me, mentioned an emergency, and sent me to her assistant. The assistant was nice and professional, but I never saw the head of HR again. It seemed like the top HR person decided I wasn't worth interviewing. If the Paley Center runs their business this unprofessionally and possibly discriminatorily, I'm glad I'm not joining them. It was a very disappointing experience.
- Are you prepared to not speak with key decision-makers?
- Is the environment unorganized, rude, and unprofessional?
Vice President Marketing
HR contacted me about two weeks after I applied to schedule a phone interview, though she was nearly half an hour late. The call itself was fine, and I was invited for an in-person meeting the following week. The two people I met with in person were also at least 15 minutes late. The week after that, I was asked back for more in-person meetings (this is now four weeks after my initial application). The day before the third round of in-person interviews, I got an email to reschedule. The next week, another email came asking to reschedule again for the following week, but without a specific day or time. I followed up twice asking about the reschedule and never got a response. I'm not sure why there were so many delays and reschedules, or why people are consistently 15-30 minutes late for meetings. It would have been helpful to get a clear answer – if they decided to go with someone else, if they liked me but weren't ready to hire, or anything else. It's really frustrating as a candidate to spend hours on calls and in-person meetings and then get no resolution. Such a waste of time. It seems there are internal organizational issues and staffing problems, and management is unprofessional with a disorganized hiring process.
- HR mentioned that the salary approved for this role is 45% below the industry average.
- Given that this is a nonprofit, how does the approved salary compare to typical nonprofit salaries and the overall industry average?
