Clinical Project Manager
I was contacted by the recruiter for this job and went through 5 interviews plus a presentation. After the presentation, I was told I didn't get the job because the CPO thought I lacked experience working with developers, as my company organized product under IT. This made her think I worked in IT support rather than as a product manager collaborating with engineering. I spent 5 interviews explaining my engineering collaboration experience, including working with scrum teams, managing backlogs, and refinements. Some interviewers expressed enthusiasm about me joining. However, the CPO made the final decision based on this misunderstanding, without further discussion. I felt it was a waste of time, but perhaps it's for the best. I hope others avoid wasting their time. There are better leaders and companies out there. The team that interviewed me was great, but the leader's decision led to no offer. Everything happens for a reason. I've asked them not to contact me again.
- What is your experience working with engineering teams?
- Can you detail your experience with product discovery and research?
- Present a recent project you worked on.
IT Helpdesk Support
I was first contacted by a recruiter who set up a phone interview a few days out. After that initial call, which seemed to go well, I had a second interview over Zoom with another manager. This person joined the Zoom call 10 minutes late and then continued the interview past the scheduled half-hour mark. The questions were pretty standard, but the interviewer came across as very casual and a bit condescending when I asked my own questions. I didn't hear back for three weeks, so I figured I wasn't hired, but then the recruiter reached out again to schedule a meeting. Two days later, he called to let me know I didn't get the job but they wanted to keep my information on file in case the role became available again. Honestly, they ended up wasting a bunch of my time and putting me on standby.
- How do you manage challenging customer interactions?
- What makes you want to work for our company?
- Could you tell me about your current job and the software tools you work with?
Software Engineer
The interview process was quite lengthy and thorough, but genuinely enjoyable because everyone involved was incredibly kind, professional, and keen to understand me as both a person and a professional. They wanted to see how my skills could help achieve the company's goals. The stages included: 1. An HR interview with a technical recruiter to go over the role, my background, and anything I wanted to know about Pager. 2. An interview with an engineering manager where we discussed general software engineering topics like hash tables, scaling, performance, and stack vs. heap, plus some behavioral questions. 3. A live coding session, like pair programming with a senior engineer, to check my problem-solving, data reasoning, and communication skills. 4. An architecture interview with two senior engineers or tech leads where I had to propose a high-level architecture for an app description, using diagrams, database design, etc., without coding. 5. A hiring manager interview. 6. A People Ops interview. 7. An interview with the SVP of Engineering. The last three interviews (Manager, People Ops, SVP) were more about meeting people from different departments I'd work with, focusing on open conversation and cultural fit. 8. Finally, the offer letter and negotiation, though no negotiation was needed as we agreed on the compensation upfront.
- Tell me about core engineering principles.
- What are your thoughts on code complexity?
- What are your thoughts on architectural questions?
Sales Director
It started with a friendly recruiter call. If that went well, I got an email with the next steps. They had me create a keynote presentation about my industry knowledge, understanding of the company and role, and my strategy to hit KPIs, which took time and involved sharing my personal ideas. Then, I had an interview with a peer, followed by an interview with the hiring manager, and finally, a meeting with some partners and counselors. In total, there were 9 interviews. For some, I presented the same keynote and got different feedback, mostly positive. Others were just Q&A. The recruiter confirmed everything went well and an official offer was expected, but salary details were never shared. Ultimately, I received an email stating the position was on hold due to 'company strategy.' They never provided a definitive closure, and to my knowledge, the role wasn't filled. About a year later, the position reopened. I contacted the recruiter, reminding them I'd already gone through the process, and asked to be considered again, ideally with another interview. I got a quick response saying they would, but it never happened.
- Do you have a client portfolio you can share?
- What's your understanding of our company?
- Please prepare a keynote presentation of at least 15 slides outlining your knowledge of the role and your strategic plan.
