It was easy, they called me in the afternoon. They wanted to explain the job and ask about my typing speed. Then they asked about references, asked for my social security number and start date, and asked when I could start. They also asked if I had good transportation and explained the work hours.

Interviews for the state aren't great. It's a panel interview and a lot hinges on how confidently you answer. It's not very conversational. Since everyone knows confidence is king, it definitely encourages exaggerating your experience and expertise. Also, there is about a 98% chance you will be asked if you know how to use Excel and make a pivot chart. Don't ever say no or hesitate when answering that. A lot of the questions were pretty typical, but the 3-person panel took notes the whole time and didn't look up. They also asked some job-specific questions about working with certain systems.

  • Can you describe your experience building reports in Cognos?
  • Do you have experience with Excel, specifically creating pivot charts?

The interview process started with the questions first, which was nice. It usually involves three interviewers on a panel, and the interviews are about 45-60 minutes long. However, things might be changing, and I've heard that if it's not in person, you might not get the questions beforehand.

Confirmed questions2 questions
  • Describe how you would handle situations in the workplace involving clients.
  • Describe how you would handle situations in the workplace involving coworkers.

I took the civil service exam back in October and then got a call for an interview in late January. It wasn't really an interview though, more of a group info session. HR checked our paperwork and staff from DHS talked about the job, the training, and how the hiring process works.
